As the Pirates geared up for the first full-squad workout of spring training on Monday, Oneil Cruz found a moment of tranquility, reclining on a bench at Pirate City and absorbing the surroundings. Manager Derek Shelton, recognizing the significance of the day and Cruz's pivotal role, engaged in an impromptu chat, adding to the anticipation surrounding the towering shortstop.
While crucial questions about starting pitching, bullpen effectiveness, and positional battles linger, the spotlight shines brightest on No. 15, underscoring Cruz's impact on the Pirates.
“It’s like he was built in a factory, man,” remarked Rowdy Tellez, attesting to Cruz's imposing stature. “He’s like an action figure. He’s a massive human. Having him back healthy is going to be huge for this team.”
Cruz, with his colossal potential and commanding presence, represents a dial that can be turned up to maximum for the Pirates. The missed opportunities of the previous season, marred by a left ankle fracture, evoke contemplation on what might have been.
Speaking for the first time this spring, Cruz reflected on the learning process during his time off, from the devastating ankle injury to his current state and aspirations for the upcoming season.
“Me being in the lineup will help the team a lot,” Cruz emphasized, with major league coach Stephen Morales translating. “Last year, I missed it. I know I was missed by the team. I know I can contribute a lot to the team and get more wins, that’s for sure.”
Despite the setback, Cruz gleaned insights from the dugout, enhancing his understanding of hitting nuances, infield defense, and the strategic aspects of baseball. Now, at 100% with no restrictions, Cruz is determined to make a significant impact.
While team infield drills on Monday showcased some timing and consistency challenges for Cruz, his lateral and quick-step movements were flawless, emphasizing the priority on his health.
“I put in a lot of work in the offseason and right after I got hurt,” Cruz affirmed. “You’re trying your best and your hardest to get back on the field as soon as possible. I’m in a way better spot this year because I’ve been working so hard.”
The Pirates, eager for a boost in their lineup, anticipate Cruz's return to address the deficiencies in power and consistency from the previous year. Deploying Cruz at the leadoff spot could set the tone for the team, with the potential to extend the lineup's depth.
Manager Derek Shelton acknowledged the impact Cruz could bring, stating, “Adding an impact player back in the middle of the diamond, that’s something that’s definitely going to benefit us.”
While lofty goals of a 30-30 or 40-40 season were common discussions last spring, Cruz tempers expectations this time, focusing on the condition of his ankle as the key to unlocking his full potential.
“It’s hard to put a number on it because it’s a different club, but he’s an impactful player,” Shelton remarked. “I think we saw that last year in spring training and the short number of games he played, the strides he had made with another year. Adding an impact player back in the middle of the diamond, that’s something that’s definitely going to benefit us.”
